Vice-Presidents of India

The Vice-President of India is the second highest constitutional office in the country. He serves for a five-year term , but can continue to be in office , irrespective of the expiry of the term , until the successor assumes office . The Vice-President is the ex-officio Chairperson of the Council of States [ Rajya Sabha ] . The Vice-President acts as President, during casual vacancy in the office of the President by reason of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, until a new President is elected

There have been 14 Vice-Presidents of India since the inception of the post in 1950 . Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice-President of India. He took oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 13 May 1952 . Krishan Kant is the first and only Vice-President to die in office

Presidents of India

The President is the Head of the State in India . He or she is the first citizen of the country. Article 52 of the Indian Consitution states that there shall be a President of India and as per Article 53 , all the executive powers of the Union shall be executed by him or her either directly or through officers subordinates to him. 

On 26 November 1949, the Constitution of India was adopted and came into force on 26 January 1950 and Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first President of India . There have been 15 Presidents of India . Apart from these 15 , 3 acting Presidents have also been in office for short periods of time . Zakir Hussain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed are the only two Presiddent died while in office
